Upton Warren (19 Viewers)

The reserve's first Roseate Tern was an adult which briefly dropped into the Moors Pool during 1999’s Spring All-Day Birdwatch on the 8th May where it was observed by Stuart Croft, John Belsey, Roger Hill and Terry Hinett. The bird was seen only for 45 seconds in late morning from the concrete hide on the west shore of the Moors Pool. It was first noted as it alighted briefly on the tern nesting platform at 11:15 am before almost immediately taking flight in a relaxed manner, flying directly in front of the concrete hide and then along the shoreline of the south-west corner before disappearing south-west over the Sailing Pool accompanied by two Common Terns. The Birds of Upton Warren 1999 described the bird as follows: “…very clean, almost white, upper and lower wing, pink flush to the breast, black bill and extremely long tail streamers”

As well as being the second record for the reserve, today's Roseate Terns were only the fourth record for Worcestershire and both the first multiple AND the first return passage sighting. The other county records are:

28th May to 1st June 1972 - Westwood Pool
19th May to 21st May 1993 - Eckington
8th May 1999 - Upton Warren

Even on a wider basis, the West Midland Bird Club recording area (including the large reservoirs of Staffordshire and Warwickshire) has only had 24 records. Of these just four were multiple counts (three of two and one of nine in the region's first record at Blithfield on the 4th June 1941) whilst four of these records were return passage sightings.

SURVEY at FLASHES Tuesday 25th August

Tomorrow the TRUST are carrying out more tests and survey work at the FLASHES from 9am to 5pm. So I would advise any birders to get out birding well before this time. .

the Flashes this morning. Plenty of passerine activity in the dying pines in the bridge scrub triangle. Later a bit more in the scrub left of the sewage works running along the Hen Brook - although a scope is essential. The 2 redstarts performed well behind the hide in the hedgerow and along the public footpath hedgerow. otherwise much as yesterday evening.

Tuesday Work Party

It was mainly brush-cutting and raking today: we cut down the vegetation on the promontory between Amy's and the Broadmeadow pool to make a suitable feeding area for Snipe; we also cleared overhead leaves and the grass verges along the Causeway; there was a brief skirmish in the never-ending war against Himalayan Balsam; Paul tidied up the North Moors track.

Today's team was Paul, Bob O (on canoeing detail at the Flashes with Andy), Bob P, Janet, Jim, John C, Ray and me.

Birding highlights were 3 Common Sandpipers and 5 Avocets presumably from the Flashes and intimidated by Andy Harris, as are we all. We also had a Little Egret, and a female Sparrowhawk perched for a while in the Elder in front of the West hide. Plenty of hirundines swarmed low to take the flies raised by the work on the Promontory.

I see that the Juv. Roseate Tern is ringed. Can the photos be enlarged to ascertain its origin?

Richard

I have played around with Dave's original photos but still cant make anything out on the rings other than they are both metallic; given the distance and the equipment I think we are lucky to have as good as we have got. I believe its a good bet that the bird has come from Coquet Island but we will never know for sure.

Juvenile Black Tern through the Moors Pool this afternoon (Mike Jeeves as per Des) and juvenile Arctic Tern at both the Flashes and Moors Pool (Des)

Juv Arctic Tern on the Sailing Pool this evening as per Gert plus 40 Sand Martin over the Moors Pool
