i am talking about the out-of-print $50 average price on amazon title Sparrows of the United States and Canada: The Photographic Guide by Rising and Beadle!

how can it be out of print since 2002? i liked the random Alberts Towhee plate i saw, good field points! where can i get one of these?

If you need a general photo guide, the Stokes East and West are pretty good with their photos. I use them a bit for shore birds and gulls. But the one bird per page format has prevented me using them much in the field. The photos of sparrows in Kaufman are small and colors not quite as good. Together they might work for sparrows. Kaufman is good at showing birds in flight, if that is essential, as for gulls.

I was going to go West at some time, so I got Stokes West. I read through all the descriptions of new birds to me. Then the trip got delayed, and by that time I had Sibley West too. So only Sibley and Kaufman made the trip. Stokes has remained a stay at home reference book for me.

Notice the section where they offer two books together. Does anyone know the difference between these two books?http://www.amazon.com/Sparrows-Unit...17470/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_a/002-8918849-9470401

Sure do Larry. I own them both. The Photographic guide is the better of the two in my opinion, but both are worth owning. The other is the "older" version with color plates and B&W illustrations by David Beadle. His artwork is good, but there was a real attempt to locate good quality photos of several different races of sparrows so you will find a nice collection of plumages throughout the newer publication. It's important to note that the text is different between the two books. Even though the general information is the same, there are things about both that make both worth owning.
