'Pathetic’ response to disappearing hen harriers (1 Viewer)

Martin Thomas

Retired student
From the Sunday Herald article here.

'Meetings with landowners had "descended into farce" after one apologised for arriving late because he had been "shooting a couple of hen harriers", [Kenneth] Sludden [secretary of the South Strathclyde Raptor Study Group] said. A gamekeeper also allegedly expressed hatred for the birds, describing them as "rats with wings".'

Enraged and speechless.

Actually, I think it's much better that these two idiots said what they did rather than spout some honeyed lies. It clearly shows the contempt with which they hold the laws concerning raptor conservation and few politicians like to be made to look so foolish. More foot in mouth comments like this would do nicely!

So nothings changed then, did anybody expect any other? The status quo will continue as long as those making the laws and legislation, or sitting in judgement in the courts, are the same ones who are doing the shooting!!!

A depressing thought! This was certainly the case in prior to the mid-20th C, but how far is it still the case in Scotland (and elsewhere?) in the 21st C?

I'm afraid it's still very much the case, especially when you've got the likes of the chief Inspector in Thurso, Caithness 29/10/08. http://www.johnogroat-journal.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/5614/New_bid_to_beat_wildlife_crime.html, praising the good conservation work carried out by the game keeping fraternity and the assistance they give to the various wildlife protection bodies. His naivety or "worse" shows just what the so-called protected wildlife in the north of Scotland are up against.
