Red-tailed hawks - unusual groupings (1 Viewer)

We've been seeing groups of 8 or more (up to 12) Red-tailed Hawks in remote desert areas around Death Valley, CA and Beatty, NV. It's been over 120 degrees for a few weeks. These groupings are appearing near water sources. Is this typical behavior during extremely hot weather? I've never noticed it in the 6 years I've lived out here, and we've had several comparable summers.
