Birding near Miami Airport (1 Viewer)

Hi folks

I've got a single afternoon at Miami on 26th August. I would love to go to some nearby habitat (car hire if needed) and try for Prothonotary Warbler, Great Crested Flycatcher and Eastern Kingbird. Any suggestions? If the site is good for migrants that would be even better!

thanks, alan

Hi Alan,

Everglades National Park would be the ideal location to find all three of these species but may be a bit too far from the airport for an afternoon trip. A great spot to find these species if they are around of course would be Matheson Hammock Park. This park is about twenty minutes from the airport and suppots the habitat needed to find these birds. Another two parks that are good for birding are AD Barnes Park and Cape FL (Bill Baggs State Park) both are great places to look for migrants druing migration down here. You never know what you will find at this coastal migrant trap.

Let us know if you need more info.

All three birds could be found as migrants at A.D. Barnes, Bill Baggs SP, or Matheson Hammock State Park (only one of your birds -- Great Crested Flycatcher -- breeds in any of these parks). It is a good time to start looking for migrants, and typical species for that time of year include Yellow-throated Vireo and Red-eyed Vireos, Yellow-throated, Prairie, Black-and-white, and Worm-eating Warblers, Northern and Louisiana Waterthrushes, American Redstart, and Northern Parula. You also have a chance for Prothonotary Warbler but maybe a tad early for the real big push of Eastern Kingbirds.
