When are Owls (Eastern Screech Owls) vocal? (1 Viewer)

I've searched for this information using a variety of resources, but have not found the answer... Last year, I could go into a local park sometime during the spring/summer and almost always hear the territorial call of the ESO, then see him. This year, I'd looked forward to finding him again, but I never heard him despite my trying during all of the spring/summer! My conclusion was that he'd found another home. BUT, yesterday, I finally saw him up in a tree (didn't hear him, saw him) in his familiar area. After watching him for a bit, he finally gave his territorial call.

My questions are:

1. When are the ESOs most vocal (specifically giving their territorial call)? During spring, summer, or fall? Maybe I was wrong in remembering it as the spring/summer; maybe it was, in fact, the fall (late summer)

2. Any other reasons why he'd become more quiet?

Hi Bono,

I've found that one of the most consistant ways of finding owls is to go out on the owling section of your local christmas bird count. We get good numbers of them each year here in CT - personally it's also the only time I feel comfortable about someone playing a tape to try and illicit a response. However I'm assuming your in a part of Canada where they are regularly found .
