Wow - very high on "cuteness" factor! I'm surprised they have such little fluff balls at this time of year - would it be a second brood? (They can't be very old can they?)

They are great pictures - glad you had more presence of mind than I did! The pictures and story show some of the literal barriers which "development" causes.

Sea-farming Ponds Sept. 16, 2011

Gretchen, could be a second brood. I have seen very young Grebes in the first week of October a few years back. I know there was extensive flooding there in August, maybe the first batch was lost?

List from Friday afternoon: a hint of change in the air... The recording only has one note of Wood Sandpiper. Don't let the title fool you. It's basically all the same Greenshank.

Common Pheasant
Mallard
Spot-billed Duck -- large group of new arrivals
Garganey -- also a new group of around 20
Little Grebe -- 30
Grey Heron -- around 10

Those Watercock pix are terrific Tom - thy used to breed in HK in the 1970s - shots like yours make me wish some of the habitats now being managed for wetland birds might pull in a pair.

Cheers
Mike

In Sichuan I haven't seen Watercock for the last three years - the reasons I suspect for making this an uncommon species here, agricultural mechanization/development and general drainage of any wet corners so loved by this bird must have contributed to a large decline within the whole of China.

Sea-farming Ponds Sept. 18, 2011

Had a nice few hours out today with my daughter. We are currently experiencing a decent cold front that's bringing strong wind and so I was out with three layers on and still cold. Felt more like November but the weather is supposed to warm back up to normal soon. The best part of the day was the last 30 minutes (isn't that always what happens?) when 16 Oriental Honey Buzzards migrated over with a few Eurasian Sparrowhawks and a Hobby. The buzzards were making very good time angled slightly into the wind but letting it take them without much effort at all. I know a spot between two mountains where they can be seen migrating in the end of September if the weather is right. There was also a very distant group of Teal that would move around from time to time and I found a few Baikal Teal mixed in when looking at the very distant flight images later at home. Not the best day for photography.

Spot-billed Ducks - around 20
Eurasian Teal - around 30
Baikal Teal - at least 3, could be more
Little grebe - many
Grey Heron - 10
Great Egret - 10-15
Little Egret - 1
Chinese Egret - 1
Eurasian Kestrel - 3
Northern Hobby - 3
Peregrine Falcon - 1
Oriental Honey Buzzard - 16
Eurasian Sparrowhawk - 4
Common Moorhen - 10-15
Snipe sp - 2 flybys
Far Eastern Curlew - 9
Common Greenshank - 4
Green Sandpiper - 4
Wood Sandpiper - 1
Black-tailed Gull
Black-headed Gull - 10
Vega/Mongolian Gull - around 50
Oriental Turtle Dove - 15
Common Kingfisher - 2
Ashy Minivet - 1
Chinese Penduline Tit - heard 1
Sand Martin - 1
Barn Swallow - many
Yellow Wagtail - 10
White Wagtail - 10

Laotieshan Oct. 1, 2011

I have been really busy with work and haven't posted in a while. Terry Townshend, his friend Peter Cawley, and Paul Holt are here at the moment and I joined them all day Saturday at Laotieshan. Terry and Peter are here for around 10 days and Paul Holt is staying for longer. They are camped out at Laotieshan and putting together some amazing records. First for Dalian birds for me that they have seen include Black Stork, Steppe Eagle, Eurasian Woodcock, Hair-crested Drongo etc... Paul had over 1000 Oriental Honey Buzzards in his first afternoon. Saturday's highlights included over 180 Grey-faced Buzzards, 4 Greater Spotted Eagles, 2 White's Thrush, a Grey-headed Lapwing, and a few Eurasian Woodcock. I was raptor watching when the Woodcock were seen, would have been a life bird for me. Laotieshan is simply amazing during fall migration! Paul and Terry will have complete reports when they are finished and I will link their reports to this thread when they are produced. They drove out to Jinshitan tonight and had dinner at our place before we head out all day up the coast tomorrow. I will list the species seen by me last Saturday below. I'll leave the more detailed count numbers in the very capable hands of Terry and Paul for later. I spent almost the entire day raptor watching so the records reflect that. There were also ridiculous numbers of Ashy Minivet and White-eyes.

Eurasian Kestrel
Amur Falcon -- many
Northern Hobby
Peregrine Falcon
Osprey
Oriental Honey Buzzard -- many

Pallas's Leaf Warbler
Yellow-browed Warbler
Chesnut-flanked White-eye -- many many

Glory days . . . and hugely gripped!

The pic of the Bull-headed Shrike is oddly compelling - like you used a wedding photographer's soft focus filter or something. I start to worry when I see as ruthless a killer as any on the planet and think "mmmm . . . quite cute".

Cheers
Mike

Also totally impressed with this!!!!! Are there any past reports from this area that describe this fantastic passage spectacle - or has it gone unrecorded???

Chinaguy,

There is a past report on page 4 of this thread! This is the same place that I saw ridiculous numbers of Honey Buzzards etc. last fall. I'm sure Terry Townshend and Paul Holt will have amazing trip reports coming in the future that I will link to this location. You can see Terry's daily reports right now here http://birdingbeijing.wordpress.com/ They are recording some amazing species and numbers.

Tom

Hi Tom - I was thinking on a more historical perspective. It's amazing to think that in a country of 1.3 billion that a birding site like you've found seems to have gone almost unnoticed. Do you ever see any local birders?

The guys there now have seen some local bird photographers in the last week. I only just heard about another bird-watcher in Dalian a few days ago and look forward to meeting him soon. There are some old reports if you really dig them up on the internet. This location just was opened to foreigners in the last few years but the guys there now have been asked to leave the viewing platforms twice still. Seems the local army isn't too keen on foreigners being in some areas as there is a naval base and radar equipment in the vicinity. Personally I think it's google earth and satellites that they should be worried about, not some guys with cameras and spotting scopes! Is that seriously what they think they're up against?! Anyway, more frustration along the way.....

Laotieshan Oct. 7, 2011

All day again with Paul Holt and Peter Cawley at Laotieshan. We watched migration for a few hours and then Paul and I spent mostof the day at one of the Laotieshan banding stations. It was an absolutely awesome experience being there with Paul and assisting the staff in bird retrieval from the mist nets. We were able to keep an eye on migration from the station which, at one time, included a group of 5 Greater Spotted Eagles.
