22. Mount Lemmon, in the Santa Catalina Mountains, is the southernmost ski resort in the United States.

The base of the Catalina Mountains starts at the northern edge of the city of Tucson. Mount Lemmon elevation is 9,159 ft (2,792 m) vs an elevation of 2,643 ft (806 m) at the Tucson International Airport. The drive up the Catalina Highway is a popular birding route because it offers many birding species with the quick elevation change. Habitat was lost in 2003 from the Aspen fire covering 85,000 acres, and destroying 340 cabins/homes/business on Mt. Lemmon.

Here is an online webcam shot from the University of Arizona campus with the camera aiming north at the western end of the Catalina Mountains.

It is quite a drive to the top, starting out in the desert and ending in the pines less than an hour later ...
