Sorry for the rubbish description too follow:
I spotted a large wader, longish straight bill, dull grey brown with no obvious markings on the body save for when it took off it had really really obvious white flashes under the wing. It called a 3 note alarm as it flew which I can't really describe but could perhaps id from a phonetic offering from someone.

I'm thinking perhaps Willet?

Willet certainly does look a lot more contrasty once it spreads its wings than it does otherwise. Do a gallery search for several excellent images of flying birds. (or follow this http://www.birdforum.net/opus/Willet to the Opus entry and follow the gallery link from there)

My Natl geographic guide describes the voice as Pill-will-willet. Just do remember that the bill of this species is actually shorter than e.g., greater yellowlegs.
