Hope it picks up a bit in the next weeks otherwise it'll be hard work ! Looking forward to our upcoming trip though.

Still VERY quiet out there seabird-wise folks :-(

Biscay: 29 Aug - 1 Sep 2010

2 Sabine's Gulls, 1 Manx Shearwater, 4 Storm Petrels and 14 Great Skuas was a poor tally for us in Biscay at this time of year. We sincerely hope it picks up!

Undoubted highlight was a Leatherback Turtle - pix of this plus cetacean sighting summary and cetacean encounter maps are at http://www.companyofwhales.co.uk/html/news/news_fr.htm

Lots of terns passing Strumble Head in West Wales over the weekend. Indeed, the biggest number was on Saturday and on Sunday there were at least 14 Black Terns so with a Roseate on Saturday 'all' the terns were noted - Common, Arctic, Little, Sandwich, Black and Roseate. Saturday was also notable for a small passage of Swifts with 10+ noted after an initial 'September' Swift over Fishguard Harbour on Friday evening. Around the 'Head' on Sunday afternoon there were many warblers - presumably all held up by the freshing S or SSE wind. Waders were passing in small numbers with a good variety - Dunlin, Sanderling, Turnstone, Knot. All in all, a 'busy' weekend over and in off the sea.

After working Spurn Point yesterday for no reward an enjoyable couple of hours in the seawatch hide late afternoon produced 30 Arctics, 3 Bonxie, one Pom, 2 ad Little Gulls and a Sooty Shear. And to finish off, in-hand views of Wryneck, first i've seen for a while - i'd forgotten how small they look!

Biscay 4 - 7 Sep 2010

30 Sabine's Gulls, 2 Little Gulls, 6 Sooty Shearwaters, 62 Storm Petrels, 9 Pomarine Skuas, 40 Great Skuas, 8 Arctic Skuas, 3 Common Scoter, 8 Sandwich Terns, 3 Common Terns, 6 Arctic Terns, 10 Black Terns and 12 'Commic' Terns.

It was another great trip for cetaceans once again - a full cetacean sighting summary and encounter map is at http://www.companyofwhales.co.uk/html/news/news_fr.htm

Cheers

Awesome stuff from The Bridges today Owen! I'm rather impressed by the number of Black Terns more than anything!!!
