It is well known that many seabirds breeding in North and Central Europe move to the Mediterranean for wintering. For that reason, last Saturday, ornithologist carried out the Wintering Seabirds Census in different points along the coast of Valencia Region, East Spain.
Some colleagues and I did the census from my home town in the Harbour of Gandia. These were the results after 3 hours of census from 8:30-11:30.
Balearic Shearwater 808
Yelkouan Shearwater 2
Gannet 8
Greater Flamingo 517
Black-headed Gull 23
Mediterranean Gull 1
Audouin’s Gull 8
Yellow-legged Gull 36
Sandwich Tern 15
Sanderling 1
Cormorant 9
Great Northern Diver 1
Little Egret 1
Anas sp. 38
Larus sp. 18
In winter, the East coast of Spain is an excellent area for watching the endangered Balearic Shearwater, as well as many other interesting species. Not every day someone can enjoy of more of 500 Greater Flamingos flying over the sea!!
PD: I have attached a photo of a flock of Balearic Shearwater with one Yelkouan. I would have attached more and better photos, but they are too heavy.
