Hello everyone, after some 35yrs I'm going to start birdwatching again. I always had a healthy interest in all these past years but confined my watching to the garden and my summer holidays abroad.

Looking forward to going out and about and using a Kowa scope (on order) so watch out for some very amature pictures.

I'm particularly interested in wildfowl and waders as I live in Northant's and we have plenty of water in my location. metroman.

Greetings Metroman!

I began birding again after having fazed for over 20yrs. I have since had a fantastic 2yrs back in the field and look back on the break with incomprehension!

Good Luck and Best Wishes, Chris.

Welcome back to birding, Metroman, like you, I took a break from serious birding about 1976 (just when puberty hit, found other pursuits more urgent). Always had a casual interest in it, though, and got back into it seriously about twenty years later. Seriously regret not having 'birded' in the intervening years as I lived in China, Spain and Oman, in birding hot-spots compared to where I now live. But no bother. I got married, had kids, came back to Ireland, and now with wife and kids sometimes reckon I should have stuck to birding! It's great to be a re-born birder, things have moved on so much in terms of information, equipment and sheer numbers of people passionate about birding. As with any interest, there is some harmless bitching, and some 'purism', but the great buzz I get out of BF is that there a lot of very good people out there enjoying something that when I was a kid was thought a bit...well, odd. (Being an Open Birder and Proud, compared to thirty years ago, is a bit like coming out of the closet). Beware of marketeers trying very hard to part you with your hard-earned cash, though, for every tiny little 'innovation' in optical equipment. I fell into the 'upgrade' mentality and paid through the nose for it. Anyway, enjoy your birding, keep us posted, have fun with your new Kowa! Best Wishes,

Hello Metroman, my local patch is Clifford Hill Gravel Pits, just outside Northampton.
If you're into wildfowl & waders, there's been a Red-breasted Goose there recently (unknown origin) Red crested Pochard & a Red-necked Grebe, 400+ Golden Plover, Ruff & Black-tailed Godwit.
I may see you out & about, around the county.

All the best

Mark
