Dyfi Osprey Project (1 Viewer)

WHIMBREL

A lifelong Naturalist...
Thought it might be of interest for people to know that the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust are currently having a 360 degree Observatory built at the Dyfi Osprey Project in mid-Wales, it will be ready for visitors in May... I'm delighted that this new venture has been undertaken by the Trust, we will now have the best views possible of these magnificent raptors.

Nora (the female osprey) was back at the nest-site on the 24th of March last year, Monty (her spouse) was a few days behind. I just can't wait to hear that their both 'home' safely...and have a much much better year this year than the terrible summer of 2012...:t:

Yes very much looking forward to seeing the new observatory. Live streaming starts later today.

Last years 'stream' had more than a million hits by visitors from all over the world. The drama involving the only surviving chick Ceulan during the terrible storm, had us all on tenterhooks, perhaps this year will be far kinder and Monty and Nora can raise the full brood.

You can find more information at http://www.dyfiospreyproject.com/

Whichever of them arrives first this year will have to put up with this cold March weather, incidentally, its the coldest March for 50 years!!! The short term forecast is for more of the same, with bitingly cold easterly winds, its a really tough time for most critters...but it can't go on for ever - can it!!! :'D

No of course it cannot go on forever but it can for a week at least.

Not quite so windy at the nest today as in recent days, but we still await our Ospreys...!!!

You can imagine how tough it must be, travelling a few thousands miles and then arriving at your destination to find bitter cold conditions, perhaps this experienced pair are waiting for better weather...just like the rest of us |^|

There was a blog about this very subject yesterday entitled The Last Lap

Thought provoking piece, there are also some other very interesting articles on the blog.

Thank you for the point to, Tiger :t:

I've noticed that the surrounding mountains (on the Dyfi Live Stream) appear to be slowly losing their snow.

Two Ospreys were on the Lwynn-Onn and Cantref reservoirs, Brecon Beacons National Park (South Wales) yesterday afternoon, this is right on the migration path north. They could move westerly towards the Dyfi Estuary or continue north via the Elan Valley Dams and the Hafren (Severn) Watershed.

I've got a funny feeling in my bones that our Dyfi Ospreys return is imminent...it's anytime now |^|

The weather here in south Wales is dry, cold and sunny, at least our in-coming birds have reasonable weather conditions and I believe the next few days are forecast to be similar :t:

Still neither of our resident Ospreys here at Cors Dyfi. The female, Nora, arrived here on the 24th of March last year, with Monty, the male, arriving on the 2nd of April. The cold weather has halted migration, so it was expected the birds would be later this year, compared to last year, with temperatures here right now only a mere 5C, plus the wind chill! Temperatures at this time last year were up to 20C, so it was expected that the birds were going to be later. Despite obvious concerns about Nora, with her being a week late compared to last year, there is still plenty of time. There are numerous reports further south, and there has been a report of a sighting of an Osprey at Aberdyfi, at the mouth of the estuary, so volunteers here are looking up into the skies and hoping! The time frame for Monty's return has now opened, so we hope to see him back in the next few days. The first 'intruder' osprey last year was seen on the 4th of April, so despite seeing only 2 birds here on the Dyfi, there is still plenty of time.

We have just had an Osprey pass over the reserve, however this bird did not stop and carried on upriver, up the valley.

Thanks for the Cors Dyfi Reserve update Justin :t:

March was officially the coldest for 50 years, we have to accept that migration has been effected drastically, the extremes of the British climate have to be accepted (for better or worse!) - compare last years early April temperatures with this years - what a difference :eek!: apparently, this current cold spell is all down to the jet-stream, and unfortunately it's going to be with us for at least another week |!|

Our Ospreys will be back on the nesting site when their ready and not before |;|

Very windy here today at Cors Dyfi, however clear and sunny. No sign of an Osprey here today yet, however there will be plenty of binoculars held to the skies on the look out!
