Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds April 16, 2015

Lots to see on an afternoon visit. I also checked my camera trap and caught a wild boar! Students are very excited as I tell them today. It's a few steps between that and an Amur Leopard but it's a start ;)

Since wild boar are obviously present in your area, I am surprised that they have not over-run the place given the lack of firearms. Even with almost anyone living in rural America owning or at least having access to such, there are places, especially in the South, where wild hogs are a very serious problem. They can easily reach 250-300 kg. Not the sort of thing that you take on with a sharp stick. Would make for a tasty hog roast though.

Oh, thanks for sending a few Brambling my way!

You just need to contact the Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance (ALTA) and convince them that since you have a natural food source and are in their original range, they need to reintroduce leopards .;) That would make you real popular with the locals! :eek!:

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds April 20, 2015

Had a great time out this afternoon after work. Two unexpected situations arose:
1. I encountered a juv. Black-tailed Gull caught up in fish netting from its bill to its legs. I managed to catch it and worked for a long time with my trusty Swiss-army knife scissors. Big thanks to the Swiss birders I guided a couple of years ago for that gift! Honorable mention goes to Brian Jones for indoctrinating me into carrying a knife with me at all times to tackle mist nets!
2. I was on my way home when I passed a local photographer taking shots of Common Shelduck. I stopped and chatted and soon we were looking at two Little Owls together. Very nice guy. This is now the third individual I've seen at the ponds in the last few months after seeing no one the previous 5 or so years. I gave him one of my student's phone numbers and they have been in touch, QQ's exchanged, with more dialogue to follow I'm sure.

Also, some Swallow comparison pictures below.

Amur Leopard, wild Boar and knives

TOD. There was better news late last year, with a female Amur Leopard with half-grown cub being caught in a camera trap, Jilin. Bearing in mind the estimated global population only numbers between 80-100, this news is cause for celebration.
The Wild Boar in China appear to be a lot smaller than the juggernauts you come across in the USA or Eastern Europe.
Good sharp net cutting knife is always useful, although through the superb efforts of Jonathan and Vivian in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, we now have a very good anti-net Fuzz who upon receiving Lat/Long. locations will show up and destroy the nets. Very good news indeed as I find the arm grows weary after cutting up 40 or so nets.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds April 21, 2015

Made the rounds today and discovered that the pond I concentrate the most on is being pumped dry!!!! It wouldn't surprise me if tomorrow it was pumped back full so I'm trying not to be too alarmed right now. See the picture of the Coots wondering what is happening.

Tom to the rescue again! I was just about to ask for confirmation of a photo and checked your thread first. Sure enough, there it was! I was correct as it turned out - the Mew Gull.

If somebody was using the pond to raise crab, fish or shrimp they may just be draining to harvest. That is what goes on around the Gedalou Reservoir that I just visited. Your right though in that I have also seen a pond drained and refilled the next day for no apparent reason. Couldn't figure out what this fellow was up to but I've seen others doing before.

Led 3 separate class trips to the wetlands last Friday and saw the following throughout the day.

My main pond area is completely ruined. All the water is drained and machines are digging out the entire pond. It will be a pond stocked with fish and then the owner will charge money for people to fish there. I've seen Baer's Pochard, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Shrenck's Bittern, etc etc there and the pond will most likely be completely unusable for birds when they're done with it. That's the bad news. The good news: the ponds are a large area and there is a lot more habitat there still. It's just disappointing for me personally, having birded that one pond so extensively through the years.

Hi Tom,

Are your Pale-legged LW singing or just calling? I'm interested because as you probably know, PLLW and Sakhalin LW are currently inseparable, apparently in the field. I would expect you to get a few Sakhalin through given location, and the ringing team may well have already trapped them in recent years?
A short burst of song playback at times may resolve the issue, it may not..
Interested in these intriguing and quite complex issues regarding both these and the Arctic complex.

great stuff anyway!

Mark,

These two were not singing at all. I was listening for it but they were busy feeding around some dead trees laying on the ground. I've never confirmed a Sakhalin so am always on the look/hear out for one. I'm not aware that the banding station here has ever had one either.

Tom

Quick spot of birding with my daughter in the morning. We mainly focused on one pond.
