Is auto focus work with sigma 50-500 ?
Manual focus is usable for bird fotograph ?
Is d40 or d40x a option with tamron 200-500 ?

All yes as far as I am aware.

Manual focus needs good eyesight - thats the only thing I can think of :)

Same with the D40X, Rob.

Guerrero, just to expand on what Rob says, the D40 and the D40X have no motor inside the camera to drive the auto focus in most lenses.

This means that only Nikon's AF-S lenses (which have their own internal AF motors) and some Sigmas (those with HSM drives, and the 80-400mm OS which has a built-in motor, though not HSM - this might also be true of the 18-200mm OS, but I've struggled to find out) will auto focus.
