Off to Australia next year, which guide would you recommend? Seems like two main ones, also are there any publications on where to find birds in the south west

Thanks for any feedback

The Menkhorst et al guide is the best and most up-to-date field guide by a fair distance:

The best bird-finding guide for Australia is by Dolby and Clarke:

For SW Australia, you may find Frank O'Connor's website helpful, although I'm not sure how up-to-date it is:

I'd also recommend using Ebird to check for good sites and recent sightings in Australia.

Hi,

Not sure if I've caught you in time but a book I carry regularly is Field Guide to Australian Birds (Complete Compact Edition) by Michael Morcombe.

It's a great little book and quite suitable for carrying with you (particularly as a traveler) due to it's compact nature. It packs in quite a bit of detail for a compact edition and I rarely feel compromised in that regard.

Perhaps return to tell us how your birding went (on that note I just started a new thread "Birds of 2019").

All the best,

Dave
