Taken today in Amargosa Valley, 90 mi North of Vegas.

This is, without a doubt, the most gorgeous hawk I've ever seen..

Great pictures Maureen! Certainly a Ferruginous Hawk. You can see the feathered tarsi and the prominent long yellow gape. It is similar to pictures of Dark Morphs and Intermediate Rufous Morphs shown in plates 440-445 of Wheeler's Raptors of Western North America. And your pictures are every bit as good as the ones shown there!

Yes, Ferruginous Hawk; they're beautiful birds, more like eagles than hawks.

Excellent photos and, as you say, a very striking bird.

I can't recall seeing many examples of the dark morph in photos (and never in real life).
