Petroleum jelly

Wondering if someone can help. I have been having a extremely big squirrel problem so I put petroleum jelly on the roof of the bird house on the pole and on the squirrel protector bc the squirrels were jumping on everything. I noticed that the birds were perching on the squirrel protector and pecking at it. Are they going to be ok? Will that harm them? There is snow covering it. I'm so worried!

Probably was'nt one of your greatest ever ideas. However,if consumed in small quantities, the birds should be ok,although they might mess your garden up a bit as apparently it acts like a laxative.
If i were you i'd remove it as soon as possible just as a precaution.
