Lesvos Bird Reports 2018 (1 Viewer)

28 September 2018 - Griffin vulture, Booted eagle

The last full day for many of the visiting Northern Birders brings hurricane force winds to the Eastern Mediterranean, this mornings BBC weather forecast said: "A Mediterranean hurricane dubbed 'Medicane' to hit Greek islands. There is a risk of severe gales and 250mm of rain in parts of the Mediterranean where the storm has developed".
It might shake things up a bit:

Meadow pipit 2 *
* this species rarely reported on Lesvos, said to be a winter visitor
the reportee originally thought them to be tawny pipits, amongst a

04/10/18

Skala Kalloni Salt Pans

Eleni Galinou reports on Lesvos Bird News :
Dalmatian Pelican 16
Osprey

Lotzaria
Red footed falcon - a count of 13

The Greek Army was conducting parachute manoeuvrers/war games at Alykes Wetlands today.
This activity takes place several times annually, in the wetlands, which is a shame
given that it is an area preferred by ground nesting and migrating birds and that
they have many other similar areas to operate in.

From another reporter:
Skala Eressos
European robin - not a common sight on Lesvos
Reed warbler
Golden oriole

Alpine tit query - should be tephronotu

Alpine Tit....?

New name for me there.

I think that he's referring to the Asian sub-species of long tailed tit,
Aegithalos caudatus tephronotus , not alpinus.

I have only just looked it up myself, so thanks for the reminder to query it with them on Observado.

Thanks Andy.

16/10/18 Tsiknias River Ford
News to-day from an expat couple staying on Lesvos, that the vegetation and undergrowth surrounding the main Tsiknias River ford area, has been decimated .Workmen have cleared most of the: shrubs, grasses and reeds from the surrounding area, apparently in the name of flood relief.
To some degree the area had become somewhat overgrown, making it difficult to see warblers, crakes and herons. However the same foliage provided cover for nesting birds, including nightingales and cett's warblers ( in the past penduline tit) and many insects, amphibians and reptiles.
I have witnessed similar events on Lesvos , both on the East River and at Faneromeni Ford in the distant past, lets hope that the vegetation quickly recovers.

Tsiknias Ford clearance images October 2018

The only recent bird news from Lesvos was the report by Stylianos Zannetos of a Goshawk and Sparrow Hawk at Amali's forest on 24 October 2018.
In the meantime Mr & Mrs Buczko have given their king permission
to share some images of the clearance work along the Tsiknias River
at Skala Kalloni.
First image is looking downstream to the Gulf of Kalloni, from the ford, second is a view of the ford from the East Bank,
third photo is looking upstream from the ford itself.
Lesvos Bird Watching featured in a November magazine supplement.
The November edition of Bird Watching magazine features a 24 page supplement World Birding Guide
which includes a feature on Lesvos amongst it's pages.

Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos Alikudi Pool Lesvos 11/05/17

2017 news
Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos Alikudi Pool Lesvos 11/05/17
I heard from the Hellenic Records Committee on 01/11/18 that Tina and myself's
record of the Pec Sand, at Alikudi Pool, Lesvos has been accepted as a
record by their rare birds committee.
I would still be interested in the two guys (possibly from the West Midlands)
with whom I discussed it at that site, contacting me,
if by any slim chance they see this post.
