also buzzard i would like to see what you can acheive with ballpoint-got any sample sketches? i have fun making sketches out of what i have right there by me-pens, post-its, white-out, kids menu blank areas, etc.

Click on the thread not far below this entitled "from the sketchbook" and you will find ballpoint work there by me....

I don't know about any of our overseas members but one UK artist who's work I adore is David Measures. He often does sketches in the field using a biro and colouring in with watercolours or doing the entire sketch using one of those pens which have four colours in them.
He won the BBC Wildlife Magazine wildlife artist award in 2000. :t:

i saw your pen sketches and they are unbelievable! does the quality of the ball-point matter? what brand do you use?

I use Bic black biros usually, though am not fussy really.. Cheap as hell!

They are very versatile, under-rated drawing tools. if you use a light touch you can get the faintest of lines, which then remains permanent as it is ink. Pencil smudges over the years just by opening and closing sketchbooks. Also I find I work more quickly with pen.
I am also left handed, my hand often smudges my work as a result if I use pencil...

i like the idea of using toned paper instead of white...great tip!

i dont use cheap paper...but then again i dont use the best either...but i do use a sketchpad that is spiral bound with hard covers....much easier than just the paper covers because you now have something solid to lean on...and the front cover easily folds back without ruining the paper...so its double thick, two covers you are now leaning on...

the reason why i use decent paper, is you never know when a sketch will turn out to be something that really worked....

i bring a mechanical pencil...that way i dont worry about sharpening...
but i do bring a few other pencils, 3b and a woodless, in case i want to increase a value to a darker depth....i also bring a stick eraser that is sharpened to a point, and a piece of removable adheesive...which is a lot like a kneaded eraser but much better...
i also will bring a smudgy dirty tortillion...which is one of my favorite tools
