Best DIY & Commercial Winter Roost Boxes for Finches, Thrushes, Sparrows, Cardinals
Not sure where to best post this. I'd like to put up weather-sealed and insulated roost boxes in my parents' New York backyard garden. Looking to provide shelter to birds in the size of finches to sparrow and cardinals.
Appreciate any recommendations as there are an overwhelming number of DIY plans out there.
I already understand that the entry hole/s should be at the bottom, to minimize heat loss from the top (in nest boxes, they are at the top - some nest boxes come with front panels that can be flipped upside down to turn into roost boxes in the winter).
And are two entry holes side by side better than one? One builder wrote that he noticed many birds looking into but not entering roosts with one hole because they couldn't see what's inside - when he added another hole (so 2 side by side) he had better results.
