Hi from New England (1 Viewer)

I'm not a birder, but I love birds. I enjoy feeding non-exotic birds like wild turkeys, crows, and blue jays. I equally enjoy the rodents and rabbits that join in the feast. Last winter we had a red squirrel who spent the fall gathering black walnuts and storing them in a pile on a wooden platform on a BIG pine tree behind our house (the last remnants of a treehouse where our children, long since out of the house, played when they were little). He/she built a HUGE pyramid of unhusked walnuts, and then methodically husked them, and built a new pile with the seeds on another part of the platform. Finally, he/she stored them in a big hole in the pine tree. He/she spent the winter and most of the spring and summer in and around the pine tree and the black walnut, ferociously defending his territory from gray squirrels, raccoons, and turkeys. I'd rather watch this noble creature, who we named Rory, than all the exotic birds in the world. That's who I am.

Hi Ted and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Rory sounds quite a character.... you will no doubt have much fun watching his antics over the coming year! I hope you'll tell us more about him.

Ted, as you have definitely discovered: there is much more to nature than just birds, fascinating thought they are. You will encounter a fascinating array of characters here on Birdforum too, so welcome aboard and join in wherever appeals to you.
