Hung, Drovetski & Zink (in press). Multilocus coalescence analyses support a mtDNA-based phylogeographic history for a widespread Palearctic passerine bird, Sitta europaea. Evolution. [abstract] [supp info]
The mtDNA and nuclear data suggest the existence of three taxa within the Eurasian nuthatch. Any phylogenetic analysis or conservation assessment that requires knowledge of independently evolving taxa should use the three taxa confirmed in this study rather than considering the species as a single unit. We suggest that these three taxa are phylogenetic species, and likely biological species. However, we suggest that taxonomic changes are not yet warranted, pending analysis of the remainder of the range. For example, our preliminary analyses suggest additional taxa in eastern Asia.
Presumably the three taxa would be Sitta (europaea) caucasica (Caucasus), S (e) europaea (Europe), S (e) asiatica (Asia).
[IOC recognises S [e] arctica (monotypic), following Red’kin & Konovalova 2006.]

Just how separate or adjacent are the breeding distributions, and how fixed are these boundaries? I guess it will take quite a bit of finding out!

The sample locations listed in Supp Info Table S1 give some idea of the geographical scope of each taxon, but probably insufficient to allow allocation of all subspecies (by type locality) at this stage.
