By the way, that entire reply was intended as humorous irony, and not to be taken at face value.

thankyou for the warm welcome. i will go to the other forum an formerly introduce myself. before i do, i have a correction to address:

in my original post i made a blatantly obvious mistake that i should have caught, but it was very late and my mind was elsewhere. i addressed the incompatability between Anas and Netta. There are @ least 2 merganser Genus here in the u.s.
Hooded (Lophodytes), Common(Mergus), and Red-breasted(Mergus). I do not believe it is possible, however i have seen the aforementioned wood duck-mallard hybrid and those are 2 different Genus.

Someone mention the Aythya Genus to include mergansers. Aythya includes many divers including my favorite the Canvasback...the royal duck of the olden days of commercial duck hunting in the early part of the 20th century, especially the Chesapeake Bay region...but i digress. it is my understanding that the farther apart 2 species are taxonomically/physiologically seperated the less genetically compatible they are.
e.g: buffleheads and goldeneyes(Bucephala) can easily cross breed. however Bufflehead and Northern Shovler (Anas) could not....and i personally am thankful for that would be ONE messed up looking bird!

i said all that to say this: it is more likely that this bird is indeed the Pochard in question.
any input is appreciated.....
