Phew..............
Out walking today along river and heard bird that sounded very much like grasshopper warbler except the 'brrrrrrrrrrrr' came in short bursts with a sharp choo choo inbetween each burst. So something like:

Brrrrrrrrrr choo choo Brrrrrrrrrrr choo choo and so on.

I thougt maybe a warbler of some kind??

 warm and sunny in Nth Yorks today!!

"Brrrrrr Choo Choo ... Brrrrrr Choo Choo" ???

Was it a train with a heavy cold?

;)

Sorry, couldn't be of more help!

Sorry Annie,

Having never heard a 'Gropper' I can't say whether your 'Brrr Choo' noise was one or not. My guide describes the song as "like a small alarm clock with a muffled clapper!" Not helpful, I know!

I was always taught that "if in doubt, it's a Starling!"

The description you give doesnt sound like it would be a grasshopper warbler, then tend to give a continuous clicking, that can go over for long periods and tends to vary in volume as the bird waves his head back and forth. You dont mention if there were reed beds along your river, but my guess would be sedge or reed warbler.... They are more common than grasshopper !! Reed tends to prefer reed beds, while sedge like its name will tend to turn up in most habitats, but still likes to be around water. Both birds do sound similiar, loud scratching from deep with in cover, but sedge tends to do some weird chooo's as you put it, so that gets my vote:t:

Hope I helped, as it was a while ago..
