I may not be in the right forum but will ask for advice anyway, can i extend the width of a photo at one end onl using the above programme?

Ian, Extend the canvas size and make sure that blank space is to the side you want. Using Marque tool put the rectangle around the bit you want to extend and then you can extend the side of the rectangle to cover the canvas. You might then need to do something about the join with a clone tool. There are probably other ways of doing it.
