I am interested in doing a bit of wildlife filming, I just wondered if anyone does the same and has anyone used the Canon XM2 semi pro camcorder?

I've tinkered around with a Canon XL-1s -good fun but it's a serious piece of kit in the right hands. The XM2 is it's replacement & looks to be a popular camera with wildlife videographers. These cameras can, with a suitable mount take the modern Canon SLR lenses. Though autofocus won't work with these lenses there is a huge depth of field using this set up & manual focus is easy. Image stabilised lenses retain the IS function but the big advantage is magnification. A 500mm lens on an XM2 will yield a magnification of x72.
I don't know what he uses now but many of Paul Doherty's excellent early Birding videos were shot on the XL1 & the message on the street is the XM2 is a worthy successor.

The DM-XL2 is the replacement for the XL1 not the DM-XM2.

Woops, makes my posting a lot of bullsh1t then. :'D
Perhaps its worth trying to pick up a second hand XL1s -should be some going for a decent price 'cos of the new XL2. The ability to use 35mm lenses on these cameras is a BIG PLUS.

Hi Mark,

I use one of these and find it to be a super bit of kit. If you can afford the Xl2 then it does benefit from the interchangable lenses. But lens on the XM2 is excellent and it has image stabalizing. I use it to film wildlife, surfing, kayaking and mountainbiking. It takes reasonable stills as well !
I would highly recommend it.
Cheers,
John.
