Saw this swimming bird this afternoon, but no idea what kind it is. Anyone recognize it?

It's a juvenile? merganser, probably Red-breasted, but that's a weird plumage, as summer ducks sometime show.

Merganser indeed, but it's a juv Hooded not a Red-breasted nor Common/goosander: the bill is short, thick and yellowish, the plumage is brownish, and note the pattern of the tertial that is coming through.

My first thought is also juv Hooded Merganser
