Roofs with large ER.... (1 Viewer)

Binoseeker

Mostly using spectacles (myopic) with binoculars.
Here is a list of some central focuser WP roofs with eye relief 20mm or larger for us using spectacles having a larger distance between eye and glass.

I found most of them on the only site I have found where you can filter binos according to eye relief….Thanks Optics Trade in Slovenija for a nice site :

I guess there are some other and even newer models from the manufacturers listed above, like swarovisions, that will fit in here also, but with this list can get you a hint were to look.

There are probably a lot more binos from other manufacturers that will also have this large eye relief, even porros, but I can’t list them all …. maybe you will :t:

Thank you very much. Very helpful.
I'm suspicious of budget binoculars with long eye relief, as it is hard to do.
Perhaps there is an ISO type standard for measuring eye relief, but right now it seems to be an open field. Producers seem to measure eye relief from the center of the last lens, from the center surface of that lens or from the lowest plane of the ocular surrounding the lens. I have no idea how they deal with the human eye viewing that image.
Wearing my 300/400 prescription glasses, I'm sensitive to eye relief and would really like it to be honestly presented.

Hello,

As a practical matter, I can attest to the 6.5x32 Meopta MeoPro having very long eye relief. It is the only binocular whose eyecups I have had to extend for viewing with my eyeglasses. I regret that I am unable to quantify my experience.

Happy bird watching,
Arthur Pinewood :hi:

Hi Anders,

I think your list would be much improved if FOV were included with the other specifications, because it trades off with eye relief.

Otherwise, it's an interesting list and quite encouraging for eyeglass wearers like myself. Interesting and disappointing that Leica and Zeiss are not represented.

Ed

Hi!

I don't see it as my list...I see it as a starter...you are welcome to add more info if you like ;)

Please add info on other bins fulfilling the "requirement"...20mm or larger....and FoV...

It is a bit tedious doing lists like this, so help is appreciated a lot, thanks !

From what I can tell, manufacturer's uniformly report the exit pupil distance (XPD) based on computer models. It's called the "Eye Relief" (ER). Physically, it should be the distance from the eye lens to the XP location in space, ignoring aberrations like SA and CA.

Effective Eye Relief (EER) is more notional than real and there is little agreement about how to measure it precisely, since eyecup and eyeglass geometry influences how well they will mate. Another significant factor that is always ignored is the location of the entry pupil (EP) to the eye, which is determined by the eyeglass prescription. So how "effective" a particular EER will be, regardless of how it's measured, requires that the prescription be factored in as well as the facial geometry of the observer.

All we know for sure is that EER < ER.

Might be worth adding the Minox HG & APO HG 8x43 as well. They have 19.5mm and noticeably more usable ER than some 20mm others, including the Swarovision and Zan Ray Prime.
