Birds bring in spring during Hocking Hills’ 5th annual
International Migratory Bird Weekend

Logan, Ohio – Hocking Hills’ 5th Annual International Migratory Bird Weekend comes just in time this year, as birds are starting to sing and spring is in the air. The Bird Weekend at the Hocking Valley Birding Trail is set for May 7 – 9 in the scenic southeast Ohio region, and will include numerous outdoor activities, hiking, bird watching and more. This weekend is free for visitors, and a full list of events can be found on www.birdhocking.com

This year’s program includes appearances by biologists, area naturalists and birding enthusiasts. The Hocking Valley Birding Trail educates travelers on the best locations and tips for spotting the most unique bird species that visit or live in the Hocking Hills. With the region’s thousands of acres of unbroken forest and isolation from noise, lights and pollution, the area is an ideal backdrop for exotic and rare species.

The Bird Weekend kicks off with an educational program for children from all around the state. School Days is back again this year, as more than 1000 kids learn about natural resources and environmental issues on Friday, May 7. Anywhere from 600 – 1,300 kids have participated in School Days in the past, and numerous programs including National Forest State Parks and Hocking College are involved.

The Migration Birdwalk is set for Saturday, May 8, in celebration of International Migratory Bird Day. Visitors will get to search different habitats for spring migratory birds, ranging from hummingbirds and cardinals to wrens and hawks. Last year, visitors were treated to over 50 different bird species. Following the Birdwalk, a welcome reception is set for 1 p.m. at the Hocking Cave. Throughout Saturday and Sunday guests can take photos with raptors, get the chance to hand feed hummingbirds, and participate in other fun and educational activities.

Birding canoe floats are also available throughout the weekend at a discounted price of just $20/canoe. Guests will be guided by an area naturalist through the gorgeous Hocking River, the perfect location to see various birds and learn more about the different species.

Additionally, visitors can hand-feed hummingbirds at Lake Hope State Park starting July 1. This one-of-a-kind program is available at no cost through August 29 in the nature center. Open to the public Weds. – Sun. from 1 – 3 p.m. More information is available at www.lakehopestatepark.com.
