Jinshitan Bay Dec. 14, 2014

After hearing news from Stephen of 2 porpoise feeding not far away I decided to book a boat for this afternoon and investigate. On route today I was delighted to get a call from Stephen (who was up on the cliff) saying he was seeing 8-10 in the same area. Upon our arrival they seemed to disappear however :( I did see one in the distance as we approached but lost it somehow. It left us wondering if they were spooked by the boat? At Loatieshan the fishermen spoke of the porpoise very near their boats which would seem to contradict what happened this afternoon. I was hoping to check out something that my class could come and experience next week. Maybe we need to observe from the land? Regardless, it was a very fun but cold time out on the water.

Jinshi Golf Club Dec. 18, 2014

Had a few morning hours to explore this place. There is a large lake there and for some reason there was a tiny bit of open water on one side where lots of birds were coming for a drink. I sat beside there for a bit and saw my first Red-throated Thrush in years and 5 Olive-backed Pipits! I had to clean my bins and look again at the pipits! I have seen Buff-bellied Pipit several years ago in the winter but Olive-backed?

Notable species not seen today that usually are there in the winter:
Treecreeper
Goldcrest
Pallas's Rosefinch
Hawfinch
Coal Tit
Varied Tit

Birders,

Thanks to Mark for bringing up the waterhole.....this has got me thinking. I wonder what I would see if I set up a small blind near the water hole and sat there for an extended period of time (assuming it stays open). I have a small chair that I bring with me for raptor watching that would fit perfectly into a small shelter. I also have some time to do this with the holidays approaching. Has anyone every done this before? What would you suggest for a small blind? Birds here are petrified of people so a blind is essential for good observation. What can I quickly construct or buy to use?

Tom

No need for all this expense

Strong string and fabric/plastic sheeting- if there are supports to which to tie them.

If not, you’ll need to construct a rudimentary frame. Sometimes, this can be done on the spot. (Think Bear Grylls.) Remember gusts of wind !

I’ve used a large poncho, head draped with something in the manner of a shawl- it covers the threatening (to birds) shape of the human body.

I have several waterhole that I set up a long time ago now in various place where I regurarly go.
I use one of my blind that I left at the place for the entire period I'm staying there so that the bird get use of it.
This is to me the most efficient method to get good picture of a large number of bird species, and every different period or time of the day bring different species....
My best series is by far this one :

All the best,

Jonathan

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I have ordered a blind from Canada as my parents are coming this way in a few weeks and can deliver. Jonathan's hides look fantastic! I'm looking forward to setting it up and seeing what comes. I might put my motion camera beside the waterhole looking for animals as well.

I had a small window of time so went back to the waterhole for a quick look to see if the Red-throated Thrush was still there. It was, along with many of its friends.

Azure-winged Magpie - 30
Common Magpie - 50 (mostly in one tree as I was leaving)

Dusky/Naumann's Thrush - 30
Red-throated Thrush - 1
Yellow-throated Bunting - 5

Red-throated Thrush is a nice find Tom. . . as is the drinking pool!

Interested to know if you have any recollection of seeing the black bird in the last photo? Chinese Blackbird, Starling or something else?

Cheers
Mike

Thrush

Mike, cheers for your attention to detail. I do have some other photos that I have now rescued out of the recycle bin that show a Dusky Thrush as the bird. I think on the original picture it was in an awkward position, appearing smaller. It looks to be heavily streaked from the front view. Here are two photos of the same bird.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds Dec. 23, 2014

Quick drive around at lunch today.

Take a guess at how many Shelduck in the photo and then count them. I have a theory that we (maybe only me) always guess 50-60% less than what is actually there.

I always wondered how you managed these shots. Fantastic shots.

Tom, i suggest you to start "The Number games", those Thrushes are fantastic and them being out in the open in those no's is ridiculous including the Shelducks. It's one of those "#Never seen them myself" moment.
As Jonathan said, it will work great if you leave the hide for the birds to get used to it but i'm not sure if you can find it next day.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from "Dong".

Had 3 hours to have a look around. Might as well follow up the Red-throated Thrush with a Black-throated! Also my first Black-throated in a long time. If they can be considered the same species I have have seen both extremes in the last week |:D|

Wafangdian Dec. 27, 2014

Stephen and I spent the morning at Wafangdian. The news is out about this place as we ran into 4 separate bird photographers in the area. Today there were not as many cranes as usual, counting only around 50 Common Crane. We did talk to a guy who showed us pictures of 2 Hooded Crane there last weekend. I am going again with my class on Monday so we'll see if there are more then, we might have missed the small window of time where they all fly in early in the morning. A highlight of the day was the Merlin who we first saw diving at skylarks quite near where we were. Not one buzzard today....but Pallas's Reed Bunting constantly with us wherever we went.
