The competition theme for September 2005 is 'Humorous Bird Photo'.

From the 74 entries submitted 30 have been selected to be added to the voting booth. The remaining entries were moved to their respective forums.

It was difficult this month to select just 30 for the voting booth as humour means different things to different people. Congratulations to those who did make the voting booth and commiserations to those who didn't - but thank you everyone for entering and thank you also to everyone who takes the times to view the entries and select their favourite photo.

Please select your favourite entry and cast your vote.

The booth will remain open for the next seven days after which the winner will be announced.

The entries can be viewed as -

1. Slideshow
2. Thumbnails in reverse order of the voting booth
3. Thumbnails alphatbetically

Best of luck everyone :t:

For this months rules/guidelines see here.

2005 competition themes see here.

Great pics - funny captions. But here's my cynical question of the month - how is it that photos that don't meet the rules/guidelines get selected for the final voting (e.g., must include state/county, country location)? Barbara

So many great pics to chose from...it was hard selecting which one to vote for but I managed!

Good luck to all who entered!

Apologies Barbara for not getting back to you sooner - I somehow missed your query until now. A very poingant question indeed.

One day I'll enforce this rule - honest! 'Every' and I mean 'every' competition we've run this is the most and quite often only rule that's been regularly ignored.

For prize competitions it's an automatic disqualification - so everyone be warned!

For the monthly theme challenges though some, well actually a lot of latitude so far has been shown. The reason being and this competition is a very good time to mention it, as there were so many infringements - is that if it had been enforced then a very high percentage of entries would have been disqualified.

It's perhaps a little unfair on those who did conform to all of the rules but considering the theme this month it seemd fairer to let this rule be relaxed (more accurately 'ignored') once again.

In future especially with so many entries being submitted each month and it being more and more difficult to trim down entries down to just 30 for the voting booth, that may not always be the case!

The main reasons for this particular rule - which may encourage more compliance - are that people like to know where a photo was taken. As we are a well and truly 'Worldwide' site with members from every corner of the Earth, I'd suggest very few members (me included) know where every member hales from. Quite often on an entry no location is given at all but also a photo listed as being from a particular town is simply not enough information eg. Washington - is that UK or USA - if so which Washington in the USA / UK or wherever else there's a Washington?

Adding the town and country also helps with moving photos to their appropriate forums on completion of voting. An alternative option would be to delete all entries after voting has finished which would be a shame as the competition entries attract by far the highest number of comments not to mention number of views of any photos in the Gallery - even if they don't win the competition!

Great answer, Ian, you should have been a politician!

Another question! Are we voting on the humorous value of the photograph or of the caption? The reason I ask is that it is a very different thing to be able to write a good, funny caption than it is to photograph a bird in a humorous situation! A lot of the entries. IMHO, are funny captions put to non-humourous photographs! Just a thought,
Andrew-Bede

Really it's down to each member to decide which entry to vote for and the reasons for picking that one over another.

Considering we're asking for a humorous photo of a wild bird, it's not the easiest of tasks to achieve. Some photos need a good caption to help along the humour whilst with others the humour is obvious from the picture itself.

I think humour is also related to culture so a photo chosen by someone living in the UK may have less appeal to a member in Asia or the Americas.

Thanks Ian, yes you are a diplomat! I suppose it is the old anthropomorphism thing, trying to project human feelings onto animals is a natural thing for us to do but the birds don’t know they are being funny I suppose. That‘s what makes it all the more difficult. Just out of interest would you have chosen different photos for the voting booth if you had removed all the captions first? Mmm...I wonder.

Captions were particularly mentioned in the rules -
The entry must contain a wild bird or group of birds showing humour or with a humorous caption.
so it would have been unfair to select only photos that didn't have them.

Short answer though is 'Yes'.

Thanks Ian, agree that it would be unfair to have done otherwise and I like your selection very much, all good photos. Its just me getting philosophical, but that is what photography does for me, make me think about life. Perhaps here is a good place to put on record our appreciation of the hard work you put into this every time, so often people are not thanked for what they do. Cheers,
Andrew-Bede B :)

Ian's answers are always great - diplomat comes to mind more than politician though - he doesn't hem and haw or weasel. Very straightforward, genuine, thoughtful and sweet.

Maybe folks could be given the chance to add the missing info once the photo is selected for the particular competition if it isn't used to eliminate photos? Although that would take away one of the ways I manage to narrow my voting choices, since the photos are all so good! Barbara

How come if BF has 31,342 members, only 126 people have voted with just over an hour to go?

I would have expected alot more votes, the pictures are very good.

I've wondered that myself - it's a fun thing to do but only a few participate...!? But you've also got to realize that of those 31 thousand members there are probably many who are inactive. A more real number of active members at any given time is probably more like 10,000 or less. Any real numbers, moderators?

Maybe those of who do vote could put reminders in our other postings when the voting booth is open urging anyone reading the thread to go check out the contest photos and VOTE! Barbara
