Ichneumon wasp uk (1 Viewer)

Well-known member
I thought this Ichneumonid seen in Hampshire today was distinctive, with the all black legs, white band on the antenna and eyes, but so far can't get to an ID.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Seems spot on for the first image to me but I do know it's not so easy.

Really? look again, face, tibia, pro-femora, abdomen colour, notaulus, extent of white on tip of abdomen. And that's just what can be seen on out-of-focus photo dorsally. Unless you are familiar with the thousands of species, of dozens of genera, and the dozens of species with this general colour pattern, then it's just not safe to name this without carefully keying specimen, and even then many cant be named reliably. Also it is not safe to rely on internet photos although I suspect those in link are good because of the "red camera" link which siggests the owner of the site recognises this. But of the contributors i don't recognise any Ichneumonid specialists.

So many Ichneumon species in the UK?

I like the look of Ichneumon extensorius and the flight season is ok, but sounds like an accurate ID is improbable.

Amazing amount of Parasitic wasp species.

Thanks for the replies.

Agree with ficedula, definitely not the same species as in andy’s link,
Can’t help otherwise
Cheers
James

So you don't think it looks like the first image, why not?

Dark uper legs with brown lower, pale tip to abdomen and band on antennae. I agree that no postive ID is possible but why 'definitely not the same species'? This statement, in saying that it's definitely not one particular species, seems to contradict the idea that they are pretty inseparable, if you can't say with certainty what it is, then surely you can't say either what it isn't.

I worry about your sanity sometimes Andy.

1) OP wasp has white spots on the face at the base of the antennae. Yours doesn’t
2) OP wasp has black legs, yours has mostly orange legs
3) OP wasp has only the very tip of the abdomen white, yours has the tip white and a spot on the penultimate segment
4) OP wasp seems to have a mostly dark abdomen, yours is orange at the base

Ficedula mentions a few other points.

So,
I’m sure it’s not a mammal
I’m sure it’s not a spider
I’m sure it’s not a fly
I’m sure it’s not a bee
I’m sure it’s not a sawfly
I’m sure it’s not Amblyteles armatorius
I’m sure it’s not Ophion obscuratus
I’m sure it’s not Ichneumon xanthorius
I’m sure it’s not Ichneumon extensorius

But, I don’t know exactly what species it is and it is way beyond my capacity to even hazard a guess given this group is one of the largest and most difficult amongst British insects.

Cheers

Is there any need for that crap, I didn't insult you, afford me the same curtesy, tool.

Mr Courtesy LOL.

Your refusal to acknowledge F’s perfectly reasonable disproval of your suggested ID didn’t strike me as particularly polite.

Your demands for me to reiterate the flaws in your ID didn’t strike me as particularly polite.

But, perhaps I was wrong.

Regardless, life’s too short to read the same chip on shoulder drivel on thread after thread, day after day. After 15 years on birdforum i’m finally going to have to figure out how to work the ignore function. It will reduce the number of posts available to me by about a quarter but c’est la vie.

Enjoy your birding

I didn't refuse to accept anything, this is a forum where people debate and hopefully learn through that debate. Your arrogant attitude seems to be that I accept what YOU say without question.

The chip is yours pal, ignore away, reciprocated.
