An interesting article for sure. It doesn't mention the current situation. Here, as soon as a Right Whale is sighted in an area, the area is immediately closed to fishing. All gear has to be hauled and removed. At the moment large areas of the Gulf of St Lawrence are closed to fishermen. The fishermen understand the reasoning but aren't happy to have their livelihood so heavily impacted. Hopefully some sort of compensatory moves will happen, whether extended seasons or increased catches or whatever the bureaucrats can come up with. Over on the Bay of Fundy, shipping lanes are very carefully restricted to avoid the paths used by whales. Combine these efforts with the proximity restrictions placed on whale tour boats and hopefully the Right Whales in particular but all whales in general, will suffer less because of human activity. Probably all too little, too late but we have to at least try.
