Thanks Dong Bei

Really enjoying your reporting of the migration there.

You've had some excellent records.

With much more to come, I'm sure.

Cheers

May 13 Sea-farming Ponds

2 hour stop with both of my kids. They were keen to get outside. My son was a lot more interested in some of the machines being used to back-fill than I was!

If someone thinks the Pechora Pipit below is Red-throated, please let me know. It was completely silent when I flushed it, has a faint supercilium, dark streaking, etc... but I prefer to be corrected if wrong.

Things that I saw there included:

Common Pheasant
Mallard
Spot-billed Duck
Garganey - 1
Little Grebe - many
Eurasian Kestrel - 1
Coot - 1
Black-tailed Gull - 10
Pacific Swift - 3
Common Kingfisher - 1
Black-naped Oriole - heard calling in the surrounding hills.
Chinese Penduline Tit - 5-10
Barn Swallow - only a few
Zitting Cisitcola - the smae one singing over and over again.
Oriental Reed Warbler – 1 (FOS)
Black-browed Reed Warbler – 1
Vinous-throated Parrotbill - some singles or pairs. The big flocks disperse during this season.
Siberian Blue Robin - 1
Grey-streaked Flycatcher - 1
Dark-sided Flycatcher - 1
Asian Brown Flycatcher - 8
Forest Wagtail - 1
Yellow Wagtail - same big group remains but is incredibly jumpy
White Wagtail - 5 leucopsis

Read your recent report, which reminded me that I haven't been out for a couple of days...

Thanks for the inspiration.

May 14, 2012 Sea-farming Ponds and a piece of the mudflat

Another lifer in Schrenck's Bittern today. My camera focused on the wrong thing or I would have had it quite well. That's 301..... At the ponds, everything is being funneled into one small area so I'm seeing a lot more species in one place this spring. Before the back-filling started, everything was much more spread out. I guess the last year of a site has that bonus, bittersweet really.

I figure everything is about a week later than usual this spring. The cold weather stayed extra long and spring lasted about 6 hours!

Dev,

Grey-tailed Tattler can be common in late May along rocky shorelines and mudflats. To get a better understanding of numbers, wait for Paul Holt and Terry Townshend's report from their recent shorebirding trip just north of where I am. They were actually a bit early for peak numbers of this species however.

A pair of Mandarin Ducks flew right past the windows of our 6th storey apartment this morning at 6:30 and then landed on the top of another 11 storey building. I grabbed my camera but they were gone when I returned. No nesting place on top of that building?! A nice yard list addition!
