Birding for fun
Any suggestions for these. Is the jelly fungus yellow brain fungus, an orange variant or orange floral fungus?
The orange fungus was breaking through the bark of a dead birch branch. The other fungi on dead wood, too. Lichen on oak.
Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks
Jono

Lichen ID benefits from close detail. A habitat shot like that is great though, just details are more useful. Try Xanthoria (i.e. X. parietina, but maybe not that one).

Hi Jono,

Yep, the second one is Tremella mesenterica , Yellow Brain. The colour intensity varies depending on water saturation - Yours is a little dried out, but after a downpour it'll become more transparent yellow as it takes on water.

Although the fungus in the last photo seems a bit desiccated, we should have been able to identify it if you had taken a snap of the underside (where all the important bits are). Don't be afraid to pick one, give it a sniff and turn one over, it increases likelihood of an ID by about 500%!

Cheers,
Nick
