May 2003 Competition Entry #1

Location: Montgomery, TX
Date: 5/11/03 3:05pm
Camera: Canon D60 w Canon 300 F2.8L IS w 1.4X
ISO: 1000 Exposure Time 1/2000 F-Stop 4.0
Noice reduced using Neat Image

Taken from a distance of about 7 meters this male Red-Bellied Woodpecker was using this small cavity to hold sunflower seeds from my feeder for shelling. Though this photo barely shows a shelled seed at the end of his beak I thought it better illustrates how he was using the cavity than others that showed a full seed away from the cavity, or only a sliver of a shell flying from the opening. He made several trips from the feeder to this same spot.
