Upton Warren (44 Viewers)

On a similar theme, there was 74 years between the first and second sightings of Snow Bunting on the reserve. Other significant gaps between sightings include:

32.5 years (6th March 1971 to 12th November 2004) - Waxwing
28 years (7th February 1948 to 14th February 1976) - Smew
27 years (16th August 1970 to 4th October 1997) - Gannet
27 years (14th June 1978 to 10th June 2005) - Marsh Warbler
26.75 years (6th January 1945 to 18th December 1971) - Pink-footed Goose
26.25 years (26th March 1979 to 11th June 2005) - Egyptian Goose
22.25 years (18th June 1977 to 3rd October 1999) - Red-backed Shrike
22 years (14th September 1985 to 23rd September 2007) - Wilson's Phalarope
21.5 years (25th November 1985 to 1st May 2007) - Hoopoe

Others with 20+ year gaps between sightings that I have run out of time to look up the exact details of this morning include Great Skua, Montagu's Harrier, Shorelark and Bluethroat.

Further to October's record of Snow Bunting, the second for the reserve, below is a list of the ten most historic sightings that have yet to be repeated:

7th October 1967 - Richard’s Pipit
29th July 1971 - Caspian Tern
26th September 1971 - White-winged Black Tern
3rd May 1972 - Corncrake
21st April 1974 - Velvet Scoter
27th September 1978 - Leach’s Petrel
8th August 1987 - Long-tailed Skua
7th November 1987 - Rustic Bunting
13th August 1988 - Least Sandpiper
1st May 1992 - Red-rumped Swallow

I predict a white winged black tern by this time next year;)
Luckily I did see the last two species at #uptonwarren..two others in the West Mids - velvet scoter and Leach's petrel.
All others somewhere else in the UK

Work party MOORS 6th NOVEMBER

This coming Tuesday we should be able to complete the 'opening up ' of Amy's Marsh. This is whereby we have pollards the tall willows along part of the East and south east border of the Broadmeadow. We will plant hawthorn where they have died through being shading by the willows.
The stock fence will be checked and repaired ready to have the cattle back to graze.
Please meet at the East hide from 9am
