This morning I made the six-hour round trip to the Ohio River Valley to chase the state’s first Purple Gallinule in over 30 years. In heavy rain I quickly found my target. It wasn’t a new bird for the year, as I saw the species in Jamaica in March. However, it was a state lifer (number 270), my second in a week. It was also the 182nd species on my West Virginia Year List.

When I got back, I made a quick stop and picked up a new bird for the year.
