Probably the best known site for wintering Spoon-billed Sandpipers is being rented in order to protect it and other migrant birds. Following e-mail received from OBC

Dear all,

I would like to send this email as an update on BCST's effort to secure habitat for Spoon-billed Sandpiper and other globally threatened shorebirds at Pak Thale.

Yesterday (9 Sep) was an exciting beginning for us here at BCST. Representatives from our staff and committee along with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Green World Foundation made a visit to the area where we aim to rent and start managing as shorebirds habitat at Pak Thale, Phetchaburi province. A representative from Bangkok Commercial Asset Management (BAM) who owns the land also came to guide us around. We will have another full-length meeting with them again next week in Bangkok.

We were pleased to see that many shorebirds have arrived including a flock of more than 1,000 Great Knots which is currently classified as "Endangered" by the IUCN Red List. Other notable species included big flocks of globally near-threatened Eurasian Curlews, Bar-tailed Godwits and Red-necked Stints.

We've also got a chance to discuss with local people including one of the major salt farmers in Ban Laem area regarding our project on saving shorebirds habitat while benefiting the local people. We've also got to consult with representatives from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) who takes care of mangrove forest in adjacent to our proposing land area. They have helped us understand the bigger picture of Pak Thale site management plan as a whole landscape.

As of 9 September 2016, we've raised 11,931 USD which would be enough for us to start renting and managing the land for at least 1 year. We are still open for more donations to help us extend our work on this project for a longer period of time. We are also planning to start a much more ambitious fundraising campaign to buy the land once we've gain some experience in managing a nature reserve.

We are looking forward to the next steps and will surely keep you informed!

Best regards,
