Hi

I'm having a long weekend in Munich at the start of November and would be interested in details of any birding sites in (or within easy reach by public transport from) the city.

If anyone has any reliable sites for Grey-headed Woodpecker, that would be particularly appreciated.

Steve

Grey-headed Woodpecker occurs along the Isar in Munich (best area appears to be the large green space north of the centre, starting from the Englischer Garten, through Hirschau, Oberföhring to Unterföhring) (from www.ornitho.de - you can't search on species or site if you are not a user).

If you have more time, these three sites are within easy reach from Munich. Taken from "Vögel beobachten in Süddeutschland" by Moning Wagner.
(1) Four pairs of Grey-headed Woodpecker (and five other woodpecker species) breed in Seeholz, a 2 km walk from Riederau railway station (1 h from Munich Hauptbahnhof). Leaving the paths is not allowed (protected area): 47.996481, 11.091260 (roads to the north and east are best).
(2) The Ismaninger Speichersee is quite easily reached by S-Bahn (Ismaning), but you will need a bicycle to get around and it's mostly good for water birds you'd readily see in the UK.
(3) The southern part of the Starnberger See may yield divers and ducks, but it is at its best when all other lakes are frozen solid. Not that easy to travel by public transport.

Grey-headed Woodpecker is best south of Munich.
Drive with city train S-bahn to Buchenhain, walk along Isar and go back to city train station Schaeftlarn.

If You rent a bike You will have much more possibilities.

But on foot You can also from go by train to Seeshaupt and walk to Bernried.

If the weather is fine, nice view to mountains.
