1 week in Europe in the summer (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I live rather in a bird migration country.
So from middle of June until end of August, there is rather few highlights.

I look for an area where is possible to see birds assemblies ( waterbirds, waders, herons, pelikans, flamingos, seabirds ) or birds which is not possible to find in Central Europe or hard to find.
E.g. Capercaillie exists in Alps but is shy and rare. Is there areas where Capercaillie is very common ?
How is about Rock Patridge ?
Is there good places for raptors in this time ?

Best regards
Dieter

Catalonia in the NE of Spain (capital Barcelona) may offer at least some of what you are looking for, particularly the herons, flamingoes, etc. and failed-breeders such as Spotted Redshank and other waders can be seen returning early in summer plumage.

There are also many raptors around of course but take a look at my site for further details of species.

All the very best and good luck with your trip

Rock Partridge isn't easy anywhere I guess.
The Camargue would also be fine for large numbers of birds.
I have seen Capercaillie (hens flying by...) in the Alps, but I don't think it's a good idea to search for them in summer.
The Pyrenees are excellent for raptors, especially in late August when migration picks up!

Hallo Stephen,

this sounds really interesting.

Well I hope you come, you won't be disappointed. If you do, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction for some of your target species. I may be a guide but I have no problem encouraging people to come under their own steam.

All the best

Hi,

Rock Partridge is not difficult in Ergandine valley in Switzerland. Full set of high-Alpine birds is there but be prepared for cost.

If you want birding, try N Finland from Oulu to Norway - you get Capercailles. Or Danube Delta, Donana or Camargue for water birds.

You mean the Engadin? I didn't see it there, but then again, I wouldn't know locations. Otherwise, it's great: Wallcreeper, Ptarmigan, Snow Finch, Three-toed Woodpecker and Capercaillie are all possible in (sometimes many hours') walking distance of Zernez (which has a big campsite).

I may have seen Rock Partridge in Switzerland when I was ten, but I don't trust that record anymore!

Oops yes, Engandin. If somebody wants a location, PM me.

Anyway, in a weekend last June/July I saw Rock Partridge, Rock Thrush, Snowfinch, Lammergeier, Golden Eagles, lots of Chamois and Ibex etc... Naturally, this is not a wild area in standards of most of the world. Ski lifts, lots of cottages, keep-to-footpath signs etc.

There is a sight in the Pyrenees near Pau which specialises in migration. The LPO man the site from July to November. Black Storks, raptors being the specialist birds. There are places near by for CApercaille, Wallcreeper and other local specialities......

Hi,

thank You very much for the advices.
Spain seems very intersting.
It is quite difficult, because I have no plans yet.
Wishes are of course like Greece, Slowenia in combination with area near Trieste.
On the other hand Iceland seems very interesting but very unstable weather.
I suppose much more sun could be find in northern Finnland like inari area.

Buy the way I will create a overview of breeding birds of Germany about 3 federal countries ( only with german names yet in Excel table, later should follow also english names ).

Best regards
dieter
