Celestino's Buttonquail & ditto Barbet (1 Viewer)

Björn Bergenholtz

(former alias "Calalp")

Here's some minor, tiny additions (no major advances) on the 2 X eponym celestinoi as in:

• the subspecies Turnix sylvaticus celestinoi McGREGOR 1907 (here)
= Filipino collector Andres Celestino (fl.1909*), assistant to Richard McGregor and John Whitehead (no out-spoken dedication, simply "Celestino", but compare compare with the previous Basilan Paper by McGregor, in the same Journal. There it´s definately: "A. Celestino"

*here (p.502), but most likely still alive in 1932 (here). If it´s the same guy?

---------

• the subspecies Psilopogon haemacephalus celestinoi GILLIARD 1949 (here) as "Megalaema [sic] haemacephala celestinoi" a k a Megalaima haemacephala celestinoi
= Manuel Celestino (fl. 1965), also collector, Son of the above, see here (p.5), or here (under: 5. McGregor: ...).

No births nor deaths found on either one!

However, enjoy ... if of any use?

Björn

To bring them back to the table. The Eponym Dictionary of Birds claims:

Small Buttonquail ssp. Turnix sylvaticus celestinoi McGregor, 1907 Andres Celestino (fl.1903) was a collector for John Whitehead (q.v.) (1895), assistant to McGregor (q.v.) in the Philippines, and father of Manuel Celestino (q.v.).

Amethyst Brown Dove ssp. Phapitreron amethystinus celestinoi Manuel, 1936 NCR [JS Phapitreron amethystinus amethystinus]
Coppersmith Barbet ssp. Megalaima haemacephala celestinoi Gilliard, 1949
Manuel Celestino (fl.1949) was a collector and plant-hunter in the Philippines and son of Andres Celestino (q.v.).

But to add.

Phapitreron amethystina celestinoi Manuel, 1936 OD here p. 300
This subpecies is named for the late Mr. Andres Celestino, Filipino ornithological collector, through whose hands many Philippine birds passed before becoming known to science.

At least we know in he died between 1932 and 1936. Maybe there is new information about the life dates of both?

This may be him:

Andres Celestino
Birth Date:1852
Birth Place:Bolinao, Pangasinan
Death Date:6 Mar 1952
Death Place:Bolinao, Pangasinan, Philippines
Age:100

This is almost certainly the son:
Manuel Celestino (1911-)
Birth 31 Dec 1911 Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines
Father Andres Celestino
Mother Juliana Garcia

About the father I do have some doubts.
1) Very old father with 59 years (but possible)
2) Because he was named late in 1936 dedication.
