Taken from a distance, I thought this was a crow. Then with picture and clearer view of beak I can see it is not. It is carrying a mouse. The shots were a few minutes apart but I believe they are of the same bird. Help much appreciated. Thanks.

p.s. My guess is a raven, though the beak does not look quite right.

I think it might be an American Crow. The tail is much too square for a Raven.

What about the beak makes you think it is not an american crow?

American Crow. You didn't say where you are in Calif., which is important when assessing the possibilities.

Cental valley, near Sacramento. Beak threw me because it is much larger and stouter than the beaks of crows I frequently see in the area.
