Strange growth (1 Viewer)

We found this growing on a wooden chair in a reserve I warden the other day.
Fungi or other? It is quite hard to the touch.

Think it's some sort of egg case, Jon. Mantids make something like that (only different shape) out of foam, which then hardens.
 
Thanks folks. I have seen Mantid egg cases (abroad) and thought this might be a possibility, but as you point out Nutcracker, thought it highly unlikely in Debbun!!
What sorts of moths produce this then?

EDIT a quick Google search shows Puss Moth producing just such a cocoon!:t:
