Here´s some, highly likely, additional info on yet another guy crossing my path (while looking for others). This time we´re looking at a certain Mr. Tapppenbeck and the eponym ...

tappenbecki as in:
• the subspecies Colluricincla megarhyncha tappenbecki REICHENOW 1898 (here) as "Colluricincla tappenbecki":

... which I would like to expand (and alter!?) into: Ernst August Tappenbeck (1867–1939), German explorer of New Guinea during most of the 1890's.

The above mentioned Ernst (August) Tappenbeck not to confuse with Hans (Friedrich August) Tappenbeck (1861–1889), who explored Congo and Cameroon in the 1880's. Note that both birds above originated from New Guinea (Kaiser Wilhelmsland). If Ernst Tappenbeck also explored and collected in Cameroon, Africa is beyond my understanding.

Ernst August Tappenbeck

Ernst August Tappenbeck wurde 1867 als viertes von 7 Kindern des königlicher Domänenpächters Leo Ernst Theodor Tappenbeck (1824 – 1907) und dessen Frau Louise Sophie Dorothea geb. Bosse (1839 – 1911) in Garbitz / Posen geboren.

Bis auf die Tatsache, dass Ernst Tappenbeck es als Forschungsreisenden in die Südsee, nach Neuginea, gezogen hat und er zwei Bücher hierzu veröffentlicht hat ist mir leider nichts bekannt.

Er starb 1939 in Stepnitz und hinterließ seine Ehefrau Elli Berta Marie geb. Schmidt (1887-1954) und 7 Kinder.


Hans Friedrich August Tappenbeck

Hans Friedrich Tappenbeck wurde 1861 in Wolsier (Westhavelland) als ältester Sohn geboren. Nach seiner häuslichen Ausbildung besuchte er das Louisenstädtische Gymnasium in Berlin bevor er seine militärische Laufbahn in Kulm / Westpreußen einschlug.

Beim Militär lernte er Richard Kund kennen. Diese Bekanntschaft sollte für sein weiteres Leben prägend sein, da er eine Forschungsreise auf den afrikanischen Kontinent plante. Beide bewarben sich 1884 für eine Expedition der Deutschen Afrikanischen Gesellschaft in das südliche Kongobecken. Am 31. Juli 1884 verließ die Expedition Hamburg und erreichte, nach einem Zwischenstopp in Togo, Kamerun im September des gleichen Jahres. Hans Tappenbeck untersuchte das linke Kongoufer von Stanlen Pool bis zur Kassaimündung. Ein heftiges Fieber, im Sommer 1886, zwang zur Rückreise in die Heimat.

In this case Avibase seems not correct with the reference here for Colluricincla megarhyncha tappenbecki. As well I share Björns doubt and it was Hans Tappenbeck in Cameroon and not Ernst August Tappenbeck (1867–1939). Both are brothers here with pictures.
