Turtle sp. in Enfield (London) (1 Viewer)

Simon
I was out today & saw the terrapin basking on the tree trunk. When I returned with my camera this brut of a turtle had joined it.
Can anyone please confirm the ID of it?

Cheers, Simon

A quick internet search suggests that records / recoveries seem to be remarkably common. I recall Terrapins being ten a penny in pet shops when I was younger but not Snapping Turtles. I'd only ever come across them in collections and it makes you wonder how widespread they were in the specialist pet trade.

Cheers

A lot of the ponds & a few slow moving rivers near me have terrapins in them. I was just shocked to see something this large in Greater London.

That's one hell of a turtle to be lurking around a London pond! Agree with previous IDs of Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentine). The Alligator Snapper (Macroclemys temminckii) is even more of a beast.
