Nikon EDG availability? (2 Viewers)

Does anyone know if these are available in Europe yet? There´s no reference to them on the Nikon website, oddly enough, yet online retailers announce them to be "coming soon". Meanwhile, on another forum, posters from the U.S. claim to have seen them in stores. Just wondering.

Hi,
i think it still will take a while in Europe. I just read some reports from the Photokina fair, and aparently Nikon did not even bother to show them there (while the new Swaro ELs and the new Scope with camera from Zeiss where there)

I have seen them behind the counter of a US optics store a couple of months ago, unfortunately they were very busy and I didn't have a chance to check them out.

I have heard suggesting that we'll have to wait another year (probably next birdfair) before we see them in the UK, I guess it will be similar timescale across Europe.

Thanks for the info, folks. I assume the "delayed release" of top-end bins is a ploy to whet our appetites, and make us ache to see them even more. Darn, it works....I´m a pushover for these marketing guys. Just as well the economy is collapsing all around our ears and helping us to concentrate on priorities...;)

And I thought Santa was supposed to bring you a pair of those new ELs?
Sancho, you seem to be a little fickle-minded of late ;)

If you get both, send me the one which you like less :t:

Fickle to a fault, that´s me, Tom...no, Santa hasn´t promised me anything. I´m just being seduced by the "binocular porn" advertisements, even though I thought I was cured. I prefer to wear glasses nowadays when birding, and I notice that the EL/HD´s in 8.5x boast an ER of 20mm. I don´t know what ER the EDG has. But the EDG 8x42 has exit pupil of 5.3mm (compared to EL´s 4.9mm), which could make for very comfortable viewing. Interestingly, the EDG has an 8x32 version, which the EL/HD hasn´t. But I´m just daydreaming...I don´t think Santa ´08 or ´09 will have any bins in his sack for me....

Hello Sancho,
faithful fighter for the poor and the beaten down!

First of all let me express my gratitude for us being still around.
A slight relapse isn't that bad ...... from time to time.
Mr. and Mrs. Santa (not to be confused with Mr. and Mrs. Sancho!) will have a pretty tight schedule this year, 'cause they will have to deliver all those bonuses for all those bankers before they jump out of the window. So you'll have to excuse him/them for not paying much attention for your craving for new "buy-nos".
The 30 mm class is my favourite, too. So I am waiting for new ELs of that size. But right now there's a delay in the 42 ELs. Is there a production bottleneck? With the 42s delayed, hell knows when we shall have new 32s.
The new EDGs look nice but it impossible to find anything above the Monarch level in this country. Do they have an undistorted image, too? Anyway, they are right up there at the geostationary price-level, along with the Ultraexpensivids HD and the virtual SwarovisionELs.

First I have to see if the bank who is hatching my humble savings will be still in business by the end of the year!

Keep us informed about the re-structuring of your collection.

Somewhere in between a polar orbit and limbo,
Major Tom

LOL! After what those over-bonused cretins have been doing, I think Santa should bring us microscopes instead so we can find our pension funds. Never mind, we still have our Integrity (and our massive binocular collections....).

You must be kidding. Did you have a look at the Zeiss price list recently? Microscopes are much more expensive than the best binos!
But then they have flat fovs, they are apochromatic, they ....

Hell, why don#t we have confocal binos yet?!

Yours,
Don Q. (aka Don Key)

PS: Is there a shop in Ireland where I can pay with "integrity"?

Hola, Caballero de la Triste Figura....no, shops here don´t accept my Integrity. But Mrs. S. admires me greatly for it....;)

If these EDG binos aren´t available in Yourp for another year, we´re relying on you Stateside binoholics to give us a report. And if they´re in the shops there already, we await with bated breath.....

The report says that the DOF is better in the EDG than the LX L. I suspect that means that Nikon has slowed down the speed of the focus wheel. It's a bit dicey to "fine tune" the focus of the LX L, but it can be done with practice.

Sancho,

They are out of my league, but here is one review.

Thanks Steve!:t: Wow. 22mm er on the 7x42. That´s great news for spectacle-wearers. Are bino manufacturers aiming to cater now for the greying population of the "Western" World, i.e. facilitating older birders with lighter magnesium bodywork, better er for spec-wearers, and bigger faster focusing-wheels? That´s good news for rugged, gnarled Sancho.

I can see the headline of the young urban marketing specialists:

"Get a free magnesium alloy hip joint for free if you purchase a pair of binoculars plus a spotting scope!"

If I-relief is an issue, get this one (eye-relief: 9 cm!):

What review?
Pete didn't mention CA, edge-to-edge sharpness, or the presence or absence of any other aberrations. And I really don't care who paid the bar bill.

John

That's why I called it a "report" in thread #14.

BTW, 22mm ER on 7 x 42's isn't unusual. My Leica Trinovids have it as do my old Leitz version of the Trinovid. None the less, I really would like a long, lingering look through one of those 7 x 42 EDG's! I'm a big fan of the 7 x 42.

Well, after you shoot, you certainly don't have to worry about any recoil causing the eyepiece end of the scope to break your shooting glasses!;) Or worse yet, give you a black eye!
Bob

Well, I didn't say it was a good review! A marketing infomercial of sorts I guess, but I happened to know where that one was off the top of my head.
