That ivory gull is almost the same size as the gryfalcon. Its amazing that raptors are not able to lift prey half their weight directly off the ground generally yet they are capable of doing so using flight monentum (carrying prey off the ground without landing) which is the reason why golden eagles are capable of carrying off scottish wild cats and often get killed by them while flying with them in the air and gliding downwards with prey as large or larger than themselves and even carry them back to their nest.

Some cracking photos - the gyr carrying the dead Ivory gull is excellent, as is the 1st ivory gull photo and the gyr twisting in the air.

That vertical bank shot is absolutely astonishing. It is relatively easy to achieve such a shot of an F15 Eagle, it must require not just hard work but incredible good fortune (and sharp reflexes) to clock a hard-turning Gyr.
