Andrew,

I've never been. It can be quite different from the reports I hear. More of some, less of others. I'm quite partial to the Liaodong Peninsula, however - in case you hadn't realized that :) The Dalian area is not really birded well yet. I go out in Jinshitan for an hour here and there (other than holiday times) and am only covering a tiny area. My reports are glimpses of one place wherever I can squeeze an hour in. We really have no idea what actually passes through this peninsula. Annually, it must be around 400 or more species. I'm at 318 species and I don't leave this tiny area very much. The west side from Dalian to Panjin has, in my limited understanding, never been covered thoroughly. Scary to think about really. I was discussing sightings with one of the banding staff yesterday at Laotieshan and he was telling me they have had good numbers of things I haven't seen yet (Red Crossbill, Long-eared Owl, etc...) Still way more to discover.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds April 30, 2014

Migration in full swing here. I went to the country club early but was turned away due to some type of event being there today. I quickly headed over to the ponds and was there from roughly 5:45-8:00 this morning and then again from 10:30-2:00 with my kids.

In addition to the birds I also saw 2 Coypu, 1 Tiger Keelback (snake), 1 Hare, and hundreds of large bull frogs fighting in the middle of one of the ponds.

Jinshitan forested area April 30, 2014

My kids had a club from 4-5pm at a place near a forested area. Dropped them off at 4 and picked them up at 5. Birded for 45 minutes and had a new species every 2 minutes on average. It's on in Jinshitan! (or I'm on holidays) Any patch of habitat along the ocean was buzzing today. An Osprey on the way home was a bonus.

Was out from 5:00 - 8:30 this morning and decided to try the areas where I had seen so much the afternoon before. CHINESE THRUSH=LIFER! The range in the books does not extend to where I am and I've never heard them before. I walked up half a mountain to find it. When I first heard the call in the valley below I was thinking just slightly off for Chinese Grosbeak and I was hoping for my first good looks at Japanese Grosbeak. Certainly wasn't disappointed. Another highlight was getting a Little Curlew walking up the fairway at the small golf course . I was counting Little Buntings and saw movement out the sides of my bins. It was amazingly confiding with people as I was almost on top of it before noticing. I left the Little Buntings alone and switched my attention to this wonderful little guy. I've only seen 2 before today and this was the first in Jinshitan for me.

Congrats with the thrush, Tom! And what a cracking Little Curlew, too... I think the Aussies have satellite-tagged some this year, so hopefully we'll be able to learn more about their migration route.. I've only ever seen 2 - one at Pikou, Liaoning and one at Miyun in Beijing (spookily, both in your company, I believe!).

Small Golf Course - Jinshitan May 2, 2014

Went there from 5-7:30 am this morning. The weather was dark and there were a few times I heard distant thunder. Was hoping for a massive fallout of anything but is never really happened. The Nightjar was later at dusk while at a friend's house in the same area.

Forested Area behind the Country Club

Was refused entry at the Country Club today so birded up the road behind it. This place sure can turn green fast! It was one of those fantastic afternoons of perfectly clear sky with a nice cool breeze. Temperature at 14 degrees.

The waxwing are always in the same tree that must have something to eat nearby. The area is real thick so I can't see exactly what is attracting them there.
